A sound coming from behind the ear is going to be transmitted slightly differently than one from the front. Our hearing is kind of side facing, but made to pick up more detail from the front because of the shape of the ear cartilage. It is not so much about direction, but what you do to the sound that is supposed to come across as from the rear.
